On Saturday 4th May 1471, the battle of Tewkesbury raged in the fields close by the town. In the rout that followed many sought sanctuary in the Abbey only to be pursued by the Yorkist forces where fighting continued inside the building resulting in death and capture of the sheltering soldiers. The Abbey was closed for a month due to the “pollution caused” and had to be re consecrated before it could be re-opened.
Discover the true meaning behind the concept of Church and the idea of sanctuary. He will look at and examine the subject with regards to the battle and how the Monarchy would use it for their own advantage.
